Secretary Desk

We are grateful to God for the gift of life and for the enablement to pursue a right cause. I want to bless the name of the Lord for the birth and growth of Association of Orphanages and Homes in Nigeria (ASOHON) over these few years.

ASOHON, though conceived and lived in the womb of many operators was eventually hatched and brought to life through our able president Rev. (Mrs.) George, The founder of Little Saints Orphanage (One of the oldest orphanages in Nigeria)

Founders came together in May 2009 and formed the first board of trustees for ASOHON which was subsequently registered with Corporate Affairs Commission and Lagos State Ministry of Social Development.

The meeting venue moved from Little Saints Orphanage conference room to Protea Hotel Maryland and later GRA Ikeja as more members started joining the train..

Our relationship began with Lagos state Government Ministry of Social Development with the approval of a uniform signage designed by us which carries both government and Asohon identity. It was designed to differentiate between the Government registered orphanages and the unregistered ones.

We successfully planned and established a quality stakeholders/partnership forum between Lagos state Government and our association. We are now more involved in policy and decisions of the state Government on issues affecting the homes and children welfare. We also pay regular visit to member homes and render relevant advice on good practice and standard setting.

We held several conferences and seminars on safety, emergency management, medical emergency management as a way of reducing mortality in orphanages, care givers training and child rights law. e.t.c.

Early in 2013 and after stabilising Lagos state chapter, we embarked on the establishment of other states as well as regional coordinators.

specifically and successfully we have established Oyo state, Plateau state chapter.

We have appointed regional co-ordinators for three geo- political zones – Abia State, Kwara State, Ondo State. Our drive to reach out to all Nigerian states continues and we are hopeful of achieving the best.

We have commenced correspondences with UNICEF, Federal Ministry of Women Affairs Abuja and child welfare related organisations.

Our campaign for good practice amongst operators has encouraged many operators to come out of hiding and get registered, membership in Lagos state has moved from 10 to over 30.

Our activities have not been without some basic challenges, we however thank our God for his faithfulness and grace in all ‘these things’.

I want to thank our God for giving me a team to work with, Our national president Rev. Mrs. Dele George, has been  exceptionally  wonderful. Her passion, her priority and her perseverance for the survival of ASOHON cannot be over emphasized. I want to appreciate members of the board of trustees and members of the executive for their support and cooperation over the years.

We are hopeful of centralizing the national executive council and consolidation of state chapters in the current year.

Long live ASOHON, Long live Nigeria.
